Could money for annexation be put to better use?

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Millions of your hard earned tax dollars are about to be spent paying lawyers to take on annexation fights.

So did all of the other cities meaning more court battles are about to ensue

Officers aggravated "fake cop" may be abusing public trust

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX)- As the search continues in North Mississippi for a double murder suspect, some South Mississippi police departments are telling officers to be sensitive to public worry about traffic stops.

In recent days, two people have been found shot to death in or near their vehicles. A 74-year-old man on Interstate 55 in Panola County and a 48-year-old woman on Highway 713 in Tunica County.

Authorities believe the killings could be at the hands of someone posing as an officer pulling people over.

Shrimp season opening date coming soon

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- Mississippi is one important step closer to opening this year's shrimp season.

On Tuesday, the Commission on Marine Resources gave the DMR executive director the authority to open the season, once the shrimp reach legal size.

Legal size is 68 count per pound and the shrimp are getting close to that.

Historically, the season opens around the first week of June. And it appears that will be the case in 2012.

Traci Floyd gave commissioners an overview of last year's season and talked about the conditions for growing shrimp this year.

Officials working on setting opening date for shrimp season

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- The Commission on Marine Resources voted today to authorize the executive director to set an opening date for shrimp season. Shrimp must reach the legal requirement of 68 count per pound before the opening is allowed.

The Department of Marine Resource's Traci Floyd told commissioners the upcoming shrimp season looks to be "average". She presented a review of last year's season.

It was impacted by the opening of the Bonnet Carre spillway. Last year, shrimp season opened in late May. It was one of the earliest opening dates in recent history.

Red Snapper improving says NOAA report

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- NOAA released its 2011 fisheries report on Monday.

It documents the health of some 230 fish populations throughout the United States.

Red Snapper is the fish many local anglers care about most. For several years, it's been classified as "overfished".

But there's some good news in this NOAA report card.

When charter fishing boats head out during early summer, red snapper is often the desired catch.   Fishing pressure, both recreationally and commercially, can mean trouble for a species.
